ANNOUNCEMENTS, CORRESPONDENCE, REPORTS
Pres. Philip welcomed District Governor Hanny and AG Julia and then announced that Karen Chwe will be inducted as our newest Rotarian this evening. Philip performed the induction ceremony and DG Hanny presented RTN Karen with her pin as the newest Rotarian in the world. Marilyn reported on the enjoyable President and Secretary meeting of last Friday. Topics discussed included stewardship and RYLA.
PP Susana, RC Denpasar, is helping our DG with the preparation of the Governor’s Monthly Letter and asked all clubs to keep her up-to-date on activities. For clubs like ours, who have no PR committee, this is a great opportunity to publicize projects and special events. Thanks Susana!!
Philip added that Rotary Club Canggu presented a concept of awareness education promoting the use of helmets on motorbikes. (On the subject of health and helmets, Rtn Janet has a system of calling her workers’ wives when the husbands turn up at work without helmets…to tell them that they would not be covered by insurance. Janet also sells good quality harnesses for very young children to keep them safe on a motorbike. In addition, Janet is also looking for baby helmets because the smallest size sold locally, is for two year olds.)
RC Canggu has asked us to raise helmet safety awareness and we are also welcome to join in their campaign activities.
Philip reported that Rtn Eli Lenyoun is attending RC meetings in Singapore and meeting lots of great Rotarians. Eli may be off island, but his good works are right here in Bali. Through our club, Eli recently funded five John Fawcett Foundation mobile eye clinics near Ubud and is now considering helping us with a video to raise awareness of our club’s work.
Our website features a write-up about these very successful eye clinics and we are also sending it to other clubs in Singapore and Malaysia…especially to acknowledge their upcoming Inter District 3300 &3310 seminar “Seeing Eye to Eye” on 18th October at Ipoh Malaysia. Rtn Ann Lock announced that there will be a marching band performance at Payangan Square on August 16 at 4 pm, led by Dr Ngurah. ES Marilyn offered space in her car.
A recent guest at our meeting was Rtn Susette, an elementary school headmistress in Holland. Susette expressed interest in visiting an Indonesian elementary school so off we went to introduce her to a principal at one of our local schools. Susette and the principal had a lively discussion about salaries, curriculum, staffing and enrollment. Always the teacher, Susette gifted the school with activity materials and explained to the teachers how they might be used.
DG Hanny announced a special offer to Rotarians to help them earn their very first Paul Harris pins. Any Rotarian who donates $500 (including previous year donations) will be matched by the District with 500 points, enabling the donor to have a Paul Harris pin. Rtn Janet was quick to respond to the offer!
Marilyn announced that our former Rotaract, now a Rotarian, Rtn Kaler has won a scholarship to complete his PhD in Malang, Java…a four year program. We’re going to miss him but look forward to when we can address him as Dr. Kaler!!
In a moving presentation, DG Hanny reminded us that the Rotary theme for 2014 – 2015 is Light Up Rotary. If every one of the 1.2 Rotarians lights a candle they can light up the world.
Our District’s Vision is to improve community life, increase mutual understanding and strive for world peace. Goals include increasing membership from 1080 to 1250 members in our district, increasing TRF contributions to US$200,000 and creating outstanding service projects for the community. He congratulated us as a strong club with good projects, thanked Marilyn and IPP Sue for their work last year and Philip for his contribution as new President. He then presented a large ‘Light Up Rotary’ banner to Pres. Philip.
Rtn Liset, (RC Rijswijk Ypenburg) visiting us from Holland, exchanged flags with Philip.
VP Rucina announced that the Gedebong comedy group will perform at the Sanur Festival on August 24. Sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC5ufZySXcg <be sure to watch in the highest resolution 360p so you can read the English subtitles!
DG Hanny drew the winning ticket for the raffle prize (a package of coffee) which was won by AG Julia, RC Denpasar. Since Julia is also the DG’s Executive Secretary, she’s going to need a whole lot of coffee!by
