ANNOUNCEMENTS, CORRESPONDENCE, REPORTS
President Bruce opened the meeting by thanking everyone for coming. Tonight we had a very large crowd, perhaps because of our fun guest speaker Jack Blaylock. So everyone was very animated meeting new folks that all had Ubud Community in common.
Bruce started the meeting by getting everyone to laugh by saying that normally we would go around the room and have each person introduce themselves and say where they were from, HOWEVER since we had so many guests this time he would count to 3 and on 3, everyone should call out their name and where they were
Worked well. From that we could tell we had the following guests; Akjhwpp Wd,mmme, Mwcce, and Glleaac!
Next Bruce introduced Treasure Allan Starr, the sponsor for our latest addition: Brian Goldman. Bruce give the new shiny Rotary pin to Brian and then had him tell us a little about himself. Bruce said we would ask Brian to
be a speaker at a later meeting to tell us more.
Then Bruce told the crowd about the all the projects we had just funded, including:
- Bali Children’s Foundation – scholarships for kids who need uniforms and more to be able to go to school
- Bumi Sehat – for Healthy days which bring medical people to villages that have been visited before
- Helmets Project – our Projects fundraiser, Terri has now collected over A$1,800 during her time in Australia!
- John Fawcett Foundation – bringing eye care and cataract surgery to villages
- Puppets – our Rotaracts had requested them to give to schools to help with teaching\
- Water Project #17 – Rich is staying very busy
- Paper & Pencils – given to the Rotaracts to distribute to students during their Mobile Library visits
Then we had RTN Rich tell us about his ‘Water Project’ #17!
And Allan, who has be instrumental in many of these projects told us about Books for Kelusa school SDN 4; our support for 2-3 people to go to a Rotaract conference in Java, and Yayasan Cahaya Muitiara. which does great work with people with disabilities.
One of our guests, Peter Waddell, told us about a project we are looking into. FoldScope https://www.foldscope.com/ which is a very useable microscope that is about to become available for a price of US$1 each! It is small and folds up and can fit in a pocked and yet, works well as a microscope. We are currently trying to find out about science classes in local schools. More later.
Jack is the Administer of the Facebook page ‘Ubud Community’, and has been for the last several years. He expressed his feelings about this ‘volunteer’ position and
what it means to him. He also introduced a partner that helps, Shelly. He told stories about how the website had actually saved 4 people’s lives. Amazing. He and Shelly will sometimes do follow-ups on some of the postings and in one case uncovered some terrible domestic abuse that they helped stop! He also gave examples of what they do to ‘monitor’ the site and how easy it is for them to delete certain comments/postings and even block some from further postings. Their purpose is to provide a great place for people to ask questions about the Ubud area and learn things, such as ‘what’s the best vegetarian restaurant’, ‘where can I purchase…’, ‘how do I ….’,
‘can anyone recommend a ….’, etc.
Jack really gave us all insight into what he does and how it all works to help us. Try it yourself: https://www.facebook.com/groups/balicommunity/
The raffle was won by RTN Danielle Foss and the prize was a beautiful scarf.
The meeting was called promptly at 7PM. Jack agreed to stay late to answer any questions.
Next Meetings: Regular meeting – 13 Mar. at Kakiang Garden Café on Jl. Andong , 5:30-7PM
