Margaret Barry is the founder and director of the Bali Children’s Foundation. Founded in 2012 it has expanded from teaching in orphanages to now teaching and giving scholarships in remote villages. After selecting a village with disadvantaged and poor families, local Balinese staff members work with the village leadership to introduce families to BCF and the opportunities the scholarships provide. Every scholarship is a partnership between the child, to work hard, and the parents, to support the child. This is a very important cultural agreement and vital to BCF’s success. The scholarship contributes to school fees, uniforms, shoes and socks, books, a school bag, stationery and a hygiene kit – all the basic needs to support children through school!!!

He spends most of his time trying to catch up with what’s going on and trying to make sense of it. Recently that includes UNESCO’s inclusion of the “Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the subak system as a manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy” on their World Cultural Heritage list. It’s a big thing for Bali, and it should be a good thing, but is it working? And if not why not? And what needs to be done to fix it? Please let us know if you are coming by email moc(at)easyliving(dot)com by Monday at 10 a.m. The hotel charges Rp 75,000/person which includes delicious snacks and coffee/tea.

The Laws of Sound Vibration

“Resonance”, “frequency”, “harmony”, “vibrations”, and “being in tune” – these have become part of our colloquial speech for ages now. But few  understand what these terms mean in their original, scientific sense.

This short talk will explain for the layman the extremely interesting  vibrational phenomenon behind these terms, along with a couple of demonstrations using sound.

By understanding the natural laws of vibration as a scientist understands them, many philosophical and  metaphysical ideas can then be more clearly pondered and understood.

Dan Bales of Bali Spirit Festival, on their upcoming event,  Dan is associated with Gamelan X and Gamelan Sekar Jaya.  He studied music at Cornell and is from Oakland, Ca.

The Artistic Director of this year’s One World One Stage Night Concerts’ Stage, Dan Bales is a former marching band geek, turned jazz musician, turned ethnomusicology undergrad, turned electronic music producer that was catapulted into an obsession for Balinese Gamelan music when it entered his life 12 years ago.

Since that time, Dan has studied intensively with Gamelan Sekar Jaya of Berkeley, CA (USA) and composed several pieces for processional Beleganjur and the giant bamboo Jegog ensembles, debuting the later of these at the Bali Arts Festival (PKB) last summer. Through his almost 10 years as a member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya he has had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned Balinese musicians including; I Dewa Putu Berata, I Gede Oka Artha Negara, I Made Subandi, I Putu Putrawan, and Bapak I Made Arnawa.

In 2010 Dan received a residency through UCLA’s Asian Pacific Performer Exchange (APPEX) program where he collaborated with other artists from across Indonesia, Asia, and the United States. For the last 7 years Dan has been musical director for Gamelan X, a contemporary percussion ensemble heavily inspired by Balinese gamelan music. His mission with Gamelan X has been to seek out and create a stylistic fusion between Balinese and other traditional music from around the world as well as to create new post-modern electronic cross hybridizations.

As the BaliSpirit Festival celebrates its sixth year, news of this gathering of world-renowned musicians, yogis and dancers from every continent has spread across the globe. The BaliSpirit Festival has become a magnet for fans, students and followers of every yoga, movement, healing and music calling. Weeks before the Festival, Ubud begins to fill with a colorful, international tribe of conscious travelers, gathering in anticipation of one of the world’s most inspiring events.

In Indonesia, the employment opportunity for people with disabilities is still a serious issue which needs to be addressed. Based on ILO data, there are about 24 million people with disabilities who are still unemployed. On the other hand, there are many people with disabilities in Indonesia who are capable of participation within the workforce. This is not facilitated by the current system, therefore we aim to create a platform where the employers can publish their job offers and job seekers with disabilities can access all of the available job vacancies for them, quickly and efficiently.

This is DNetwork.

Lily Wardoyo and Dr. Ngurah at Klinik Angrek

Lily Wardoyo, of Yayasan Bali Peduli, will update us on activities and progress at their two clinics – the initial facility in Kuta, and the Ubud clinic which our club helped to fund.

Yayasan Bali Peduli (YBP) is a Bali-based, Indonesian not-for-profit organization. Our mission is to prevent the spread of HIV in Bali, eliminate barriers to care and make health service more accessible.  YBP was formed in 2011 by a group of concerned Bali residents, in response to escalating rates of HIV and HIV related  deaths in Bali.

YBP operates out of two medical clinics located in Kuta and Ubud.  Each clinic targets different at risk populations on Bali. Klinik Bali Medika in Kuta is primarily focused on the MSM and gay community  in  south  Bali,  while  Klinik  Anggrek  in  Ubud  targets  pregnant  women,  families  and female sex workers.

The  YBP  program  comprises three  key  components:  clinical  services,  education/outreach, and support for PLWH.  All services, including medications, are delivered entirely free to YBP clients.

Lily Wardoyo is Chairperson of YBP. She provides guidance on policy setting, compliance and non-medical issues. Lily is a retired banker; she is also an advisor to Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) – a local NGO working on environment conservation and community development.

For many years, Lily has been a resident and active member of the community in Bali. She has an impressive understanding of the cultural and political factors at play in this unique part of Indonesia.

Jack Blaylock: Look at the Sun

Without the sun, we would not have life. Our sun is a star, just like the ones you see ornamenting the night sky. It happens to be the closet of them all, and the one our Earth is attached to. Yet, many people are ignorant of basic facts about the sun. This short talk for the layman will cover the very basics, without any difficult math, boring statistics, or difficult jargon. Come learn about this celestial companion of ours in a multimedia presentation that will cover flares, sunspots, solar storms, and other things the sun does and is that affects us all, always, until she burns herself out someday.

Jack Blaylock is an American from Hawaii who has lived in Bali for most of his life. He is interested in Balinese culture, economics, physics, metaphysics, and exploring the world’s great mysteries. A former professional musician, most of his life in Bali has been spent in the handicraft export business. Studying the sun is one of his hobbies.

Jacob and his partner, Marta Echavarria, are co-founders and collaborators in EcoDecisión, a company based in Quito, Ecuador. One of their successful ventures is Heliconius Butterfly Works – a butterfly farm that rears and exports live butterfly chrysalids to zoos, botanical gardens, museums and other living exhibits around the world.

Though fragile and ephemeral, butterflies are incredible ambassadors for biodiversity and provide a very tangible source of income and pride for local families in the Ecuadorian foothills.

Jacob will talk about his work with butterflies and local conservation in the small but megadiverse country of Ecuador.

Jen Richardson in Aceh, 2014

Jen Richardson: What We Can Do About Dengue

Jen Richardson is an Aussie ex-pat who has lived in Ubud for more than 8 years and been visiting for 25 years.

She is a writer, leadership trainer and teacher. More than 3 years ago she did an Australian government volunteer placement with Bumi Sehat, and on their behalf helped create a Youth Centre in Samatiga Aceh for children – now teens and young adults – who were orphaned by the tsunami.

Her passion for helping people in crises took her to the Philippines at the end of last year, to help in Tacloban Leyte. After a few days visiting Bumi Sehat’s latest emergency birthing clinic further down the island, she arrived in Tacloban City with just one name. Sir Joel Caminade, the president of Tacloban Rotary Club.

Jen spent two months in the Philippines, teaching English, designing a training program for local media, and – ironically – helping Rotary by running a train-the-trainer program for local community officials, to eradicate the dengue mosquito larvae. Ironic, because then she spent five months back in Australia, recovering from Dengue herself.

Jen’s back in Bali now, newly returned from a visit to her friends in Samatiga Aceh, and keen to tell Rotary here about the extraordinary work their colleagues are doing in Tacloban – and persuading us to get involved in a similar dengue-larvacide campaign here in Ubud.

Kadek Ridoi Rahayu

This young Balinese woman will be speaking about her dreams for the youth of Bali.
“The most generous joys of life is being happy over the good fortune of other.”

I have lived as a commuter since I was young as a result of going where my parents served as teachers either in the village or in bigger towns around Bali. This forced me to adjust and adapt to very different circumstances. Interacting with nature and growing up with a strong Gianyar culture made me be more conscientious and love this land. Since I joined Forum Anak Daerah raised by Lembaga Perlindungan Anak Provinsi Bali (Children Protection Institution of Bali Province), I found within myself a strong desire to fight for children’s rights. Having been awarded as an Indonesian Young Leader from UNICEF and the President of RI encouraged me to follow my heart. Bali is not only about outstanding natural scenery and famous arts but also about its abundant human resources to make a better future for the young generations. It is the time to reach my dream, when I have to upgrade myself even to study overseas in order to empower the children of Bali to fulfill their dreams and goals. It is easy to make your dream come true, start dreaming then wake up, make it happen. Speak up, don’t hide the thoughts and feelings, especially when we can make a difference.
“Success is just being happy.”
