Sewing for Living

An empowering and encouraging program for Balinese women who do not work outside the home

Sponsored by: Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset D3420 Indonesia

Sewing for LivingCurrently, Balinese women have multiple jobs: taking care children and family, doing all the house work, providing help to the community, and assisting at temple and cultural events, among other duties.  Many of these women are marginalized. In many cases, they have no rights to any family assets and go to their husband’s village upon marriage. If they try to separate from their husband, the original family will not take them back, leaving them with no livelihood. It is important for women to make their own money, not only for their self-esteem, but to enable each of them to support her entire family. With all the responsibilities these women have, it is almost impossible for them to be hired for a job in a company outside of the home. Few are will hire a woman because of the high probability she will have to miss work frequently because of her other duties at home. Rotary Club Ubud Sunset has the opportunity to help these women by providing training that will allow them to work within their homes in between all of their duties.  This would allow these women to earn money without leaving their homes, improving their self-esteem and increasing their families’ financial stability.

According to informal research, many garment factories in Bali have signs in their windows stating “Dibutuhkan Tukang Jahit Sebanyak-banyaknya.” They are always looking for workers who are skilled in sewing. Tika contacted management at several of these companies and asked if they hired people who could sew for them remotely i.e. in their own homes. They said, “Of course!”  Almost 80% of sewing for their businesses is done remotely. This is a big opportunity for people who can sew.
