Rotaract is an integral part of Rotary Club International. It began as an international youth program in 1968. The name stands for “Rotary in Action.” Rotaract focuses on young people between the ages of 18 and 30, helping them to develop leadership skills to be used professionally, in their communities, and worldwide. I Wayan Andi, pictured with Kadek Putri Gyani, from Rotaract Club Bali Ubud, an affiliate club of Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset [RCBUS], was recently District Rotaract Representative for Rotary District 3420. A Rotaract district conferences, known as DCs, are meetings attended all the Rotaract clubs in a given Rotary International district. DCs usually include a lot of games and fun activities and can last for a couple of hours or an entire weekend. The function of such meetings is to elect a new district Rotaract representative or DRR. He or she is the head of the district committee for that district.
Rotaract Club Bali Ubud also received a District 3420 award for Outstanding Project. The project is entitled ACC ke 3, Adult Care Children. The project was designed to encourage, motivate, and educate children who have been affected by natural disasters that disrupt their lives. The children in the project study English, play, and are taught skills that help them to become caretakers of the natural world around them.
During the Mt. Agung eruption of 2017, Rotaract Club Bali Ubud went to the Suukawati Refuge every Saturday to deliver books to the children and to instruct them. When an elementary school flooded in Munduk, Rotaract Club Bali Ubud met with the children once a month in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. They also delivered books and other supplies for children In Buhan, Kitamani, and Bangli when those places had to deal with landslides on December 18, 2021. The Adult Care Children Project is sponsored by Buku NakNik Bali and Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where Rotaract members can develop skills as leaders while having fun and making connections.
At the Rotary District 3420 Conference in Semarang in May of 2022, Kadek Ayu Galuh Sumanis, a cultural anthropology major at Udayana University, developed a presentation entitled “Serve with Heart to Change Lives.” It was based on the RYLA meeting’s theme, “The Peace Maker.” These future leaders discussed topics including the importance of peace, why one needs to be a good follower to become a good leader, and how leadership and peacemaking work together. They also discussed how Cultural diversity, ethnicity, religion, and governmental efforts can join to create a peaceful atmosphere.
Participants also took part in a variety of dances from different parts of Indonesia, including Bali’s Kecak dance. The RYLA meeting took place during the District 3420 Conference. After RYLA participants entertained the Conference participants with dancing and singing, they presented handmade origami cranes which symbolize peace to all the District Conference participants.
