Sewing For Living to be Featured at The 2024 Rotary International Conference!

While attending Rotary District 2023 Conference in Lombok, Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset [RCBUS] President Hans Schmid, Past President, Kartika Dewi and Secretary Made Rohani received some good news.  RCBUS’ Sewing for Living project, a successful economic development project in Bali, will be presented at the 2024 Rotary International Conference to be held in Singapore.  It will be presented as a key service project to Rotarians from around the world.

Hans, Tika, and Rohani, along with Sewing for Living participant, Dyah Safitri Widhianti, attended the District 3420 Conference in Lombok June 16th and 17th along with 275 other Rotarians. Annual Awards for the district were presented. RCBUS was selected as the second-place winner in the following categories: TRF [The Rotary Foundation] level of donations, environmental projects, and community service projects.  RCBUS both displayed and sold Sewing for Living products in the House of Friendship exhibition hall.

The RCBUS delegation learned the following information while attending the conference:

  • District 3420 has 66 clubs for a total of 1,254 member.
    • 60% are men
    • 40% are women
    • 1 new Rotaract club
  • The Rotary Foundation announced that total donations from Rotary Clubs in district 3420 amounted to $159,508.00 USD while total funding to Rotary Clubs in district 3420 amounted to $622,298.00 USD.
  • The 5 goals of the current Rotary International President Gordon R. McInally, are:
    • Continued cooperation with the Bill Gates Foundation
    • Clean water for everyone
    • A world free from disease
    • Girl empowerment through health and education
    • Adherence to Rotary International’s 7 areas of focus and the eradication of polio

On the second day of the conference, the RCBUS delegation visited the Mandalika racetrack, Lombok’s Kuta beach and a typical traditional Lombok village. They also attended the Governor’s Banquet where they learned that, by the end of October 2023, approximately 25 Rotary International representatives will travel to Ubud to learn about the Sewing for Living project.

The delegation also had the opportunity to visit a wonderful Bali Hindu temple as they traveled back to Bali.
